Should CEOs Receive Excessive Golden Parachutes Golden parachutes refer to the agreed promises made by organizations with their executives to offer benefits in case they are dismissed before the end of their employment contract. This offer provides a severance provision within executivesââ¬â¢ employment contract. In most cases, the severance agreements as well as other packages are provided in order to attract competitive executives (McCann, 2009).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Should CEOs Receive Excessive Golden Parachutes specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The determination of golden parachutes varies among organization, although it is usually derived from a proportion of the packages received by executives in the course of their employment. For these reasons, most organizations have contentions with the provision of excessive golden parachutes. The main reason for provision of excessive golden parachutes is because it goes in line with stakeholdersâ⬠⢠interests. In this regard, shareholders get the right to hire and retain executives in organizations that are prone to mergers. Such organizations use the excessive golden parachutes to lure competitive individuals to their firms. Through this process, unstable firms or firms facing stiff competition from other firms get the chance to have adorable leaders. In most instances, the provision of these services will attract candidates that have influencing characters on investors (Miller, 2007). For that reason, the investors will have confidence in the organization making it more profitable in the industry. The case of Jack Welch, a former CEO of GE made him receive a golden parachute of four hundred and eighteen million dollars attributable to his effective management of the organization. Although the amount was excessive, the reward was in consideration to his contribution during his period of service (Rivlin, 2012). At the same time, the executives are enhanced to focus on their goals regardless of chances of takeover when offered with excessive golden parachutes. In this case, the executives feel secure in their tenure even in the event of dismissal. For that reason, they will struggle to contain the challenges experienced in the turbulent industry. In the event that the firm is subjected to acquisition or merger, the executives will not feel threaten of losing their jobs. This is attributed to the fact that they will receive lucrative compensation for any eventuality (McCann, 2009). Therefore, executives will appropriately represent the firm to the last moments.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Notably, most executive will contribute back to the shareholders by remaining objective during takeovers, which improve their returns. As a result, the executives will not threaten the shareholders, but address their issues as expected since they are covere d. A good example for this scenario can be represented by the case of Stanley Oââ¬â¢Neil, the former CEO of Merrill Lynch, who ensured that the process of takeover gave meaningful returns to investors. Consequently, investors benefited from the increase in their value of shares after the company was acquired. The process of issuing excessive golden parachutes to make executives objective in the event of takeovers has a great impact to shareholders. In this regard, the executives attempt to increase the cost of takeover in order to improve the overall returns of the shareholders. During such an incidence, executives are driven by the level of golden parachutes to reach for the anticipated targets of shareholders (Sherter, 2012). Through such practice, the move becomes one of the poison bill strategies, which may limit the chances of accomplishing takeovers. For that reason, the interests of consumers are well represented, and their returns from the investments are enhanced. Furthe rmore, if the takeovers are successful, the amount generated from the negations of executives could be used to cover for their golden parachutes. As a result, the cost directed to shareholders is declined significantly. The case of Edward E. Whitacre Jr., the former ATT CEO, depicts the characters of responsible executives who effectively ensure that the company is under control even during periods of mergers. In this regard, they represent the interest of investors steered by the level of the golden parachutes. Although golden parachutes are beneficial for the effective management of organizations, the executives might misuse this privilege. For that reason, executives may develop perverse incentives, which may cost the shareholders. This can be illustrated by the consideration of irresponsible leaders who take advantage of their positions to represent their interests (Miller, 2007). Such a behavior will be triggered by the nature of excessive golden parachutes irrespective of meet ing their objectives. Consequently, this implies that executives will be reluctant in addressing the objectives of the shareholders (McCann, 2009).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Should CEOs Receive Excessive Golden Parachutes specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The fact that executives will be rewarded may influence executives minimize their stay in the organization by triggering unproductive activities, which force shareholders to fire them. Following this scenario, they will get their golden parachutes and quit before maturity of their terms. For instance, the case of Stanley Oââ¬â¢Neal, the former CEO of Merrill Lynch received a golden parachute of one hundred and sixty two million dollars for a poor job that led the company to its acquisition by Bank of America. In addition, the provision of excessive golden parachutes cost the company, which implies executives should not be attributable to excessive golde n parachutes since they are being paid to remain objective. This implies that executives could be reluctant with their responsibilities since there is compensation in case they are terminated from their employment. Following this scenario, it is essential to ensure that executives do not misuse their responsibilities through the facilitation of takeovers which will enable them receive golden parachutes and stock options (Sherter, 2012). The case of Stanley Oââ¬â¢Neal illustrates the nature in which executives could misuse their positions due to the provision of excessive golden parachutes. Through this case, Stanley never addresses the issues of the organization as expected, and yet, he was being paid and had been allocated excessive golden parachutes (Rivlin, 2012). The provision of excessive golden parachutes has immense influence on the performance of the organization and behavior of executives. Although, the practice of issuing excessive golden parachutes has been a trend in most organization, it is vital to consider the impact of its adoption in an organization. Through this critical analysis, the organization creates an ideal path to follow in addressing issues of the executives. Nonetheless, it is crucial to evaluate whether the market conditions demand retention of competitive individuals who will steer organizations to great heights. For that reason, the organization will design measures that will limit executives from misusing their allocated golden parachutes. Based on these issues, the productivity of the executives will be enhanced while the interests of shareholders will be appropriately represented. References McCann, C. J. (2009). How to Find Scholarships for College Expert Guide
How to Find Scholarships for College Expert Guide SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Paying for college is already stressful and a bit overwhelming - applying for scholarships shouldnââ¬â¢t be too. To help you navigate the process of finding (and applying for) this helpful type of financial aid, weââ¬â¢ve put together this strategy guide with everything you need to know about how to findscholarships that are right for you. Youââ¬â¢ll learn about searching for awards in the right places (perhaps the most difficult part of the whole process), selecting the right scholarships, and putting together high-quality applications. Letââ¬â¢s get started! Before the Applications: Optimizing Your Chances of Winning a Scholarship There are, of course, many niche awards that go to students with very specific skills, interests, and accomplishments (weââ¬â¢ll get to that in a bit). If you want to increase your chances of winning significant scholarship money, however, you have to step back and look at the big-picture perspective: how can you make yourself appealing to the greatest number of scholarship programs? Here are the most common things that scholarship programs look for: Academic Excellence You can demonstrate academic excellence with ACT or SAT scores, high GPA, and high class rank. Leadership Skills Show you have leadership potential with important positions (or just consistent, engaged participation) in student groups, sports, other extracurriculars, or student jobs. Read more about participating in student groups and getting a student job. Commitment to Community Service Demonstrate that you're invested in your community with consistent, personally meaningful volunteer work. Learn more about the benefits of community service. Read about different community service projects and ideas. Strong Relationships With Educators and Mentors This is a bit harder to define. Most scholarship programs evaluate relationships through letters of recommendation or even short phone conversations. Learn more about what makes for a good letter of rec, and check out examples of awesome letters. Clear Personal Goals Scholarship organizations often look for students with goals and values that are congruent with those of the organization itself. You can demonstrate that you have clear, well-developed goals (even if you don't!) through your application essays or in-person interviews, if applicable. Learn more about writing application essays and coming across well in interviews. The good news is that your scholarship strategy can be easily integrated into your greater college application goals - the things you can do to make yourself appealing to scholarships are the same things you can do to make yourself appealing to colleges. To be most successful in making yourself appealing to scholarship programs, you have to take a long-term approach - itââ¬â¢s best if you start working on the above goals freshman year (or even earlier), but itââ¬â¢s also never too late to start. Where to Look for Scholarships When youââ¬â¢re just starting your scholarship research, the sheer number of awards available can be kind of overwhelming. Here are five suggestions for how to find scholarships. PrepScholar Guides This oneââ¬â¢s easy - weââ¬â¢ve already done the legwork for you by compiling lists of different types of scholarships: Top Scholarship Lists Top Scholarships for Sophomores and Freshmen Top Scholarships for Juniors Top Scholarships for Seniors SpecialtyScholarship Lists Minority Scholarships Engineering Scholarships Other Scholarship Lists Guide to Local Scholarships Guaranteed Scholarships Based on SAT/ACT Scores Full Ride Scholarships Easy Scholarships Weird Scholarships Specific Scholarship Guides National Merit Scholarship Gates Millennium Ronald McDonald Scholarship Tylenol Scholarship Florida Bright Futures Other Scholarship Search Tools AsI mentioned earlier, you wonââ¬â¢t want to just apply to the big, prestigious scholarships - itââ¬â¢s important to apply to less competitive awards as well. To get info on almost any scholarship you can think of, check out the following online search tools. Want more detailed info? Read our guide on how to effectively use these online search resources. The College Board With the College Boardââ¬â¢s scholarship search, you can look for awards based on all sorts of criteria. There are two ways you can search for scholarships: By keyword By filling out personal information about things like minority status, disability status, religious affiliation, veteran status, and club/organization membership. The search engine then finds scholarships that match the personal characteristics youââ¬â¢ve entered. You can enter in as much or as little identifying or demographic information as youââ¬â¢d like. Obviously, the more information you enter, the more relevant and helpful the search results will be. Scholarships.com Scholarships.com claims to be the largest free scholarship search resource available, with a total of over 2.7 million scholarships listed in their database. The site lets you save, ââ¬Å"favorite,â⬠or remove scholarship matches associated with your account. Students tend to have more luck with Scholarships.com when it comes to finding relevant awards when compared to many other scholarship search engines. Your Favorite Search Engine Once you get a better sense of the scholarships youââ¬â¢d like to apply for, you can use Google (or something similar) to search for awards. This gives you a lot of freedom and flexibility when youââ¬â¢re searching for scholarships, especially if you have specific keywords in mind. You might find individual awards or lists of relevant scholarships that others have already put together. Your Guidance or College Counselor School counselors are an untapped resource when it comes to finding scholarship money! Definitely schedule a meeting with your guidance or college counselor - the earlier, the better, but ideally by the beginning of junior year. They likely have insider info on scholarship programs that may be a good fit for you, especially when it comes to local awards. If you have unique skills or needs (e.g. youââ¬â¢re hoping to be recruited for a college sport), your counselor may also be able to help guide you through the process - this isnââ¬â¢t something you can get from an online scholarship search tool. A guidance counselor can give the sort of personalized feedback that you can only get from a real, live human How to Choose Which Scholarships to Apply for You might come across thousands of scholarships in your college search, but you canââ¬â¢t apply to all of them, no matter how efficient you are. Itââ¬â¢s important to pare down the number of scholarships you apply to in order to maximize your success of winning cash (8-10 applications is a reasonable goal here). Here are some questions you should ask yourself when youââ¬â¢re putting together that all-important list of scholarship applications: Do You Meet All of the Eligibility Requirements? This seems obvious, but itââ¬â¢s really important. Carefully read through all of the eligibility requirements to make sure you meet every single one. If the organization has set specific guidelines on things like GPA, ACT/SAT scores, community service hours, etc., donââ¬â¢t expect them to even look at your application if youââ¬â¢re just ââ¬Å"closeâ⬠to meeting the requirements. This will just waste time you could have spent applying to other scholarships. If you have any questions about confusing requirements, reach out to the scholarship organization directly. Are You a Good Fit for the Award? This is similar (but not the same) as meeting the eligibility requirements. If you do meet the requirements, ask yourself (and answer honestly) whether you are this scholarshipââ¬â¢s target audience. That is, do you fit the spirit of the award and not just the letter of it? For example, letââ¬â¢s say youââ¬â¢re looking at an award for scholar-athletes, and youââ¬â¢re a great student, but youââ¬â¢ve never played on a varsity team. You might meet the hard requirements (i.e. youââ¬â¢ve played a sport), but youââ¬â¢re not what the organization is looking for when they say ââ¬Å"scholar athlete.â⬠This is an award you should pass on. Is the Scholarship Worth the Time You'll Spend on the Application? Some scholarship applications ask a lot of the students hoping to get the award. You might have to submit all sorts of documentation - everything from transcripts to financial docs to letters of rec to student essays These obstacles may be worth it for relatively large awards where youââ¬â¢re sure you a) meet all requirements and b) are a good fit for the scholarship. But for smaller awards or awards where youââ¬â¢re not the ideal applicant? Pass. When Is the Application Deadline? Does the deadline conflict with any other big responsibilities (e.g. exams, college app deadlines, important extracurricular events)? Avoid scholarshipsyou won't be able to finish in time as well as ones that will require you to miss schoolwork in order to finish. Do you have enough time between now and then to put together a polished application? If you just have to fill out a few forms and write an essay or two, you wonââ¬â¢t need that long - maybe a couple of weeks (youââ¬â¢ll want to build in time to get feedback from a teacher/counselor).If you have to put together a lot of documentation - like official transcripts, letters of rec, etc. - you might need 2-3 months. Have You Looked for Niche Awards? Most scholarships programs look for qualities that I discussed earlier in the article - academic excellence, leadership skills, community service, etc. If you can find awards that are targeted towards students with your niche interests, skills, or background, youââ¬â¢ll really increase your chances of winning some scholarship money. Even if you donââ¬â¢t use resources like the College Board search tool to find scholarships, you should go through the questionnaire asking about various group affiliations or student characteristics. If you identify with anything listed, use those keywords to look for potential scholarships (e.g.religious affiliation, ethnic background, veteran status, unique extracurriculars). The smaller the applicant pool for a particular award, the weaker the competition. Take advantage of these niche award opportunities. Do You Have a Good Variety of Scholarship Applications Lined Up? You may find a ton of great awards for which youââ¬â¢re an excellent applicant, but if theyââ¬â¢re all very competitive or very popular (see: Coca-Cola scholarship, Gates Millennium scholarship), youââ¬â¢re doing yourself a disservice. Just as(strategically minded) top students don't just applyto Ivy League schools, you don't want to just apply for uber-competitiveawards.Try to put together a list of scholarships of varying degrees of competitiveness. Look at both national and local awards. Ever hear that you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket? This is why you should apply to a variety of scholarship programs. Scholarship Application Tips and Strategies Once youââ¬â¢ve chosen which scholarships youââ¬â¢d like to apply for, youââ¬â¢ll want to be as organized and as polished as possible when it comes to submitting the apps. If you want to increase your chances of submitting successful applications, follow these tips! Get Organized Set up a scholarship application plan in the same way youââ¬â¢d set up a college application plan - organize all of your tasks and deadlines in one place. The easiest way to do this is to set up a spreadsheet with all this important info - like scholarship name, deadline and application components. This makes it easy to track your progress if you check off relevant tasks as you go. If you choose to set up your own spreadsheet (like in Excel or Google Drive), start by setting up the following spreadsheet columns (you can customize these as necessary): Scholarship name Application deadline Link to application Application ââ¬Å"startâ⬠date (the date by which you want to start working on the app) Application essay required? (check off when complete) Letters of recommendation required? (check off when submitted) Transcripts required? (check off when submitted) ACT/SAT scores required? (check off when submitted) Any other required documentation? (check off when submitted) Checkpoint:Application essay edits received and implemented Checkpoint:Application reviewed by friend or family member Checkpoint:Application submitted Think Strategically Applying to scholarships is a numbers game, just like applying to colleges. You can apply to as many or as few awards as youââ¬â¢d like, but it's best to find some sort of optimal middle ground. This middle ground will vary a bit for each student, depending on his or her goals and personal characteristics. Too many applications may leave you feeling overwhelmed (and cut into other important commitments); too few applications may mean you don't actually win any money. Here are some important questions to consider when putting together your list of scholarship applications: How badly do you need scholarship funding? If you don't think you'll end up withmuch need-based financial aid, but you're still worried about paying forcollege expenses, you might want to apply to more scholarship programs. Are youa competitive scholarship applicant?Unless you've stumbled upon some sort of unknown secretprogram, the chances are that your application for each award will be weighed against those of many other students. If you're not a strongstudent - say, in the top quarter of your class - you mayhave trouble winning merit awards. If this is the case, you may want to increase your number of scholarship apps. How much extra time do you have?If you have an overloaded schedule, applying to too many scholarship programs may hurt your academic and extracurricular performance. Overbooked students may want tobe more selective with their scholarship applications. On average, I would say the ideal number of scholarship applications on average is 8-10 - you'll want to adjust your own number of apps based on the questions I laid out above. Finally, try to choose a few ââ¬Å"reachâ⬠scholarships (i.e. very large/competitive awards), a few ââ¬Å"safetyâ⬠scholarships (i.e. small, noncompetitive or local awards), and a few ââ¬Å"targetâ⬠scholarships (mid-sized awards that you feel are a good fit). Have Someone Review Your Applications This is a super important step - it might be tempting to skip (especially if youââ¬â¢re on a deadline), but make sure SOMEONE looks over your applications with fresh eyes. If the application requires essays, itââ¬â¢s best to get feedback from a teacher or guidance counselor. Try to build 2-3 weeks into your application timeline for edits and comments. To check for typos, missed information, and general clarity, have a parent or even a trusted friend look over your apps. You could always repay the favor for a friend by looking over their applications! Even the most conscientious student should look for feedback on herapplications. What's Next? Article analysis - Term Paper Example Health care in America faces relevant pressing issues that need immediate attention. Statistics provided by the AFL-CIO (ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s Wrong With America, par. 2) reveal that 47 million Americans are without health insurance. Hacker (ââ¬Å"Health Care for Americaâ⬠, par. 2) averred that ââ¬Å"health insecurity is not confined to one part of the population. It is experienced by all Americans: those without insurance as well as those who risk losing coverage; those who are impoverished as well as those with higher incomes who experience catastrophic costs; those who are sick or injured as well as those who are just one sickness or injury away from financial calamityâ⬠. The Obama administration planned to reinforce the universal health care system for (almost) all Americans regardless of age, income, policyholder, gender or race. Incorporated in this universal health care plan is a National Health Insurance Exchange which would oversee current private insurance policyholders. Issues emerged on concerns that covering the uninsured entails paying higher taxes to subsidize this cost. In line of the economic crisis, these reforms are evaluated in the light of current budget constraints, specifically on education and Medicare programs. Further, the Miller averred that congressional leaders continue to divulge opposing views regarding the changes that were to be implemented and how to implement them. The cause of the disagreement was basically on public option, ââ¬Å"a government-run insurance scheme, and how to pay for the remainder of reformâ⬠(BBC News, 2010, par. 19) The Republicans consistently opposed Obamaââ¬â¢s healthcare reform indicating that healthcare would be "more bureaucratic and expensive" (BBC News, 2010, par. 25). They ââ¬Å"focused on reducing the cost of health care and included only modest increases in insurance coverageâ⬠(Miller, 2010, 1103). The Democrats, on the other hand, supported Obamaââ¬â¢s bill requiring ââ¬Å"most Americans to

Business Communication - Term Paper Example In fact my personal life has become developed and my personality has grown as a result of the same (Markus 2005). My daily work activities are now managed in a much better way than these used to be in the past. I have come to know exactly how to speak to a set of audience and in what attire I should be donned in when I am giving a presentation or influencing a set of audience. The business communication ranks have helped me immensely within my grooming domains and given me a chance to explore my truest basis with the passage of time. It has made me feel that I am a valuable member of the business clan and that my work realms are very significant towards the business undertakings in the time and age of today. The trends that I have seen in my current workplace domains have been slightly different from what these used to be in my former workplaces. I have understood that within these quarters I have been able to see things through within the ranks of business communication which was no t the case in the past. I have been able to manage myself in accordance with the growing business communication trends which have to be understood by people like me so that we can grow and develop with the passage of time. ... ave seen people adapt to formal routines and procedures more than the informal methodologies which were adapted within the previous workplaces where I was employed. Now I am better able to acquaint myself with the changing business communication dynamics more than these used to be coherent within my previous workplace domains (Eckhouse 1999). Hence I feel that now I am at a better place than where I used to be in the past. It gives me a vital point of advantage over the other employees who are in the process of coming to ranks with the changing business communication regimes. The message types that result from such business communication trends which have been emerging of late include the fact that only those individuals make it to the top who believe in the power of business communication and employ it to their best advantage. They perceive business communication would be of success towards their own domains and would help them grow and develop their own selves in an amicable and tr uly fulfilling way. This shall make them stand out from the crowd and make their positions apparent within the formal mix of things as far as the organizational regimes are concerned. More than anything else, the message types that are coming to the fore include the likes of establishing new trends that are wholly based on the patterns of allowing nearly everyone to be a part of the formal business communication quarters and thus giving them a chance to manifest their truest selves through hard work, commitment and a sense of being loyal towards their own skills and abilities. All said and done, I believe that any organization would dearly require that its employees believe in the premise of business communication and give their best so that not only their own growth and development regimes

Drunk Driving Essay Example for Free
Drunk Driving Essay Every year thousands of people die from drunk driving. Some survive a car accident, but others arenââ¬â¢t so lucky. Drunk drivers should have more punishments than what we have today. It would make the roads a lot safer if we had more cops out, make the blood alcohol level lower than it is now, and make the punishments stricter. This would of professional cops and law enforcements are highly trained, competent professionals who sometimes are equipped with requisite skills needed. There arenââ¬â¢t enough of them to keep a close eye on the whole town. Every day there is always something bad going on in this town. They should be doing their job not just driving around in their cars doing nothing. When cops do their job a lot of people get mad ââ¬Å"Many people charged with drunk driving protest that their driving was fine. They believe either that the officer made up an excuse to pull them over, or that the ââ¬Å"mistakeâ⬠that the officer observed was appropriate or had nothing to do with their drivingâ⬠. The law enforcements need to step up their game and protect us from drunk drivers and other things. As with any criminal charge, a person charged with driving while intoxicated or driving under the influence is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If guilty is established, the penalty will depend on state law, as well as on any aggravating circumstances and defendants cooperation with the police. Many of the punishments the law gives people are reasonable but they need to make the punishments for drunk driving higher and enforce them more. Ignition interlock devices will be required for repeat offenders and first-time offenders at or above a 0. 15 blood alcohol level. â⬠(Drunken Driving Law changes) Over the last 10 years there were twenty-five thousand people that died from drunk driving accidents. Most of the people that were driving that were drunk lived, but the people in the car with the drunk driver died. On September 3, 2012 Taylor moon passed away that morning. The was only 20 years old and lived every day to the fullest. Taylor always knew he would die by doing something he loved. This was driving fast motorcycles and party with his friends. That morning he was leaving a party to go home his blood alcohol level was past 0. 08 percent. He wasnââ¬â¢t watching where he was going and went right into the right side of a car that was coming. Taylor flew across the windshield were my friend AJ that was in the car saw his face and body when Taylor died. A. J didnââ¬â¢t know what to do the first person he called was Anthony; no one understood what A. J was saying because he was crying so much. They didnââ¬â¢t know Taylor that well. They still went to his funeral and talked to his family. If Taylor would have never got on his motorcycle drunk that morning he would still be alive today. His family and friends will all miss him dearly. ââ¬Å"God has my baby now and doesnââ¬â¢t have to feel any more pain. â⬠People could learn from Taylorââ¬â¢s mistakes and not drink and drive at all. Some people donââ¬â¢t get their family and friends will miss them more than they will ever know, because when they are gone their family is still here on earth with the pain of knowing they could never come back. Families are the most important ones because they have always been here to tell them not to drink and mess their life up. Most people donââ¬â¢t care they think itââ¬â¢s fun and it makes them look cool, but itââ¬â¢s not cool. It kills you inside even when you not dead outside. From the first sip, alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream and reaches the brain. Although youââ¬â¢re not aware of it, there is and impairment of brain function, which deteriorates further the more you drink. ââ¬Å"In most states, a person with a blood alcohol level that exceeds . 08 percent is eligible for a DUI if pulled over. â⬠Most people do not know, however the law needs to lower the blood alcohol level because even if they drink one beer they can still kill dome one in a car accident even if they havenââ¬â¢t had that much. It still messes with your mind and eye sight. ââ¬Å"Alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes is about four times higher at night than during the day. â⬠(Get MADD) We need to put a stop to this whole trend now. Drunk driving should be legalized and people shouldnââ¬â¢t drink. If they do drive then someone sober needs to follow them and make sure they are ok and donââ¬â¢t get hurt either. Making the blood alcohol level lower would be a food thing to do for our town and the world. ââ¬Å"Studies are often flawed or the results are confounded by other facts, that there is little evidence that lowering the BAC limit from. à The fact that introducing a lower BAC limits have no necessarily have a demon stable impact on traffic safety should not be taken to suggest that statutory BAC limits have no value in efforts to control the alcohol-crash problem. The function of a BAC limit may be to inform the public that the consumption of alcohol beyond a certain point is considered illegal and dangerous when combined with driving. This is because the general public has only a very superficial understanding of the relationship between alcohol consumption and BAC particularly in terms of their own behavior. Less responsible citizens have a tendency to make very poor decisions concerning driving after drinking. They donââ¬â¢t comply with the existing limit and are unlikely to change their behavior in an attempt to comply with a new lower limit. If so, a reduction in the legal BAC limit, in and of itself, would not be expected to have a substantial impact on the prevalence of impaired driving or alcohol-related crashes. Our critical review of the evaluation literature failed to provide strong, consistent and unqualified support for lowering BAC limit. At best, the results are mixed and the methodological weaknesses in the studies question the robustness and veracity of the evidence. The mission of the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) is to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries. TIRF is a national, independent, charitable road safety institute. Since its inception in 1964, TIRF has become internationally recognized for its accomplishments in a wide range of subject areas related to identifying the causes of road crashes and developing programs and policies to effectively address them. ââ¬Å"Since 1992, San Diego car accident lawyers have seen relatives grieve upon the wrongful death or serious permanent injury of a loved one. ââ¬Å"The drunk driver often survives, but tragically, innocent people are usually killed. â⬠à The goal is to arrest more people that drive under the influence of alcohol to get them off the roads. BAC level of . 03 to . 06 a person begins to fell a calming sensation, BAC level of . 06 to . 10 a person reaches this level of intoxication, BAC level of . 11 to . 20 high intoxication levels show a person that would appear very drunk, BAC level of . 20 and up having this high BAC results in an individual that begins to lose any and all judgment and motor function. What this all means is that no one should ever drive a car after having a drink. The good news is that the drunken driving accidents statistics have actually declined in recent years. The car accident statistics are still not low enough, but it is a start. People just should not drink and drive at all no matter where they need to go. A lot of us drive cars. So why do we have to share the roads with people who choose to drink and then drive? Even if you ââ¬Å"arenââ¬â¢t drunkâ⬠and are ââ¬Å"just buzzedâ⬠you should not be on the roads. Even if you have ONE drink, stay off the roads for a while. Wouldnââ¬â¢t it be a tragedy to you knowing your wife, your child, your friends, or loved one ceased to exist here on earth because of a carless drinker? It would bring my world to a crashing halt. So donââ¬â¢t get behind the wheel of a car if you have had a lot to drink because it could be your life or a life of other people you could take while driving drunk.

Essay --
John Dalton, J. J Thomson, Earnest Rutherford, Niels Bohr and Louis de Broglie are just a few scientists that have helped to create and shape ideas on what an atom and its components are. Dalton was the first to develop the modern atomic theory, although much of his theory is still true today, Dalton's theory has not proven to be one hundred percent correct. So what does that mean everyone who has been learning Daltonââ¬â¢s theory? That they are all wrong? That they shouldnââ¬â¢t learn from his theory anymore? Exactly. And why would you when Earnest Rutherfordââ¬â¢s latest, improved and more precise atomic theory is what everyone is using now. John Dalton is the scientist credited for proposing the atomic theory, the law of constant composition and the Law of Multiple Proportions. This theory explains several concepts that are relevant to our knowledge of chemistry in todayââ¬â¢s society. This includes what a pure gold necklace is made of, what makes the pure gold necklace different than a pure silver necklace, and what occurs when pure gold is mixed with copper. Daltonââ¬â¢s theory consists of: ...

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
After his mother dies giving birth to him on the day of victory in World War I in 1918, Benjamin is taken by his father, Thomas Button (Jason Flemyng), and deposited on the doorstep of a home for the elderly. That is fitting since the infant looks like an 80-year-old man with sagging skin, cataracts, and wrinkles all over is body. Queenie (Taraji P. Henson), an African-American attendant at the place, finds him. She immediately decides that baby who is ââ¬Å"as ugly as an old potâ⬠is a child of God who must be cared for, no matter how difficult that may be. And so Benjamin (Brad Pitt) the man-child grows up in the presence of elders who share their stories with him and accept him as one of their own; they are all outsiders in a country where youth is worshipped and the elderly are viewed as obsolete. Benjamin starts out in a wheelchair and proves himself to be a great listener: everyone wants to tell him what they've been through in life. A man with a poor memory points out again and again that he was struck by lightening seven different times. ââ¬Å"God keeps reminding me I'm lucky to be alive. A wealthy woman who keeps to herself teaches him to play the piano. A gregarious visitor, an African bushman (Rampai Mohadi), takes a fancy to the man-boy and introduces him the joys of sex in a bordello. At the age of 12, Benjamin looks about 70. He meets Daisy (Elle Fanning), the granddaughter of one of the residents at the home. They become instant friends and forge a bond which will last for a long time. In fact, Benjamin's story is shown i n flashbacks as Daisy lies near death's door in New Orleans at the time of Katrina. As the winds howl outside, her 40-year-old daughter Caroline (Julia Ormond) reads to her from a diary filled with pictures and postcards about this strange man who played such a major role in her life. At age 17, Benjamin is much younger and stronger. He leaves New Orleans for life aboard a tugboat that is piloted by Mike (Jared Harris), a colorful character with tattoos and a love of liquor. He travels to many cities and in Murmansk encounters Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton), who is intrigued by his mysteriousness. Although married, she begins a brief affair with Benjamin and introduces him to the pleasures of caviar, night-time dialogue, and sex. Benjamin also tastes the rush of adrenalin in war when he and the tugboat crew take on a Nazi U-boat that has just sunk a troop transport in World War II. Many of his shipmates are killed in the clash. Benjamin returns to New Orleans in 1945 and encounters his father, a rich entrepreneur who runs a button business. He is a lonely old man who is dying and wants to reconnect with the boy he ditched years ago. Instead of showing anger or seeking revenge, Benjamin treats him with kindly compassion for he has come to realize that death is a tender moment that must be treated with respect and dignity. Daisy (Cate Blanchett) is now a renowned dancer in New York who stops by for a visit. She has read his postcards from around the world and still feels they are soulmates. She tries to seduce him, but he is not ready for the changes that he sees in her. But after he inherits his father's estate, he travels to New York to be with her. But now she is too caught up in the drama and excitement of her career and artist friends. There is more to their relationship as new twists and turns bring them together again as Benjamin grows younger and more handsome. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is one of the best films of the year with its complex story, idiosyncratic characters, and treatment of the themes of love, time, aging, youth, change, death, and the impermanence of life. David Fincher directs this soulful movie with a marvelous attention to detail and pacing. The secret to the film's powerful impact is the terrific screenplay by Eric Roth who wrote Forrest Gump, a 1994 movie that was also a picaresque tale about a strange outsider and his wild adventures. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald that has been substantially changed for the screen. Another plus is the melodic and impressive music by Alexandre Desplat. What does Benjamin learn from his odd condition that makes him grow younger instead of older? What are the lessons of his adventures that take him around the world and back home again? At one point, he says: ââ¬Å"You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. You can make the best or the worst of it. â⬠Benjamin always keeps an open mind and uses each encounter as an opportunity to soften his heart. He makes the best of bad situations and does not allow them to bring him down. He demonstrates an equanimity that enables him to handle failure and success, defeat and victory, with calm. One of his favorite mantras is ââ¬Å"You never know what's coming for you. â⬠It is best to see everything as a mystery that does not need to be solved or explained away. Just live in the present moment and savor what presents itself to you. A sense of wonder is a trademark of Benjamin's personality. As a man-child in the home for the elderly, he listens to the house breathing. As a child-man he savors the start of the day looking out over the water just like his father did. Benjamin learns how to let go and not to cling to anyone: ââ¬Å"We're meant to lose the people we love. How else will we know how much they meant to us? â⬠From start to finish, this character tries to be himself, accepting his flaws and celebrating his strengths as a human being: ââ¬Å"It's never too late or too early to be whoever you want to be. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button reminds us that the best thing we can do is make the most of our journey and be thankful for the people we meet along the way. It's all gift. Benjamin embodies the zest for life described in one of our favorite quotations by Diane Ackerman: ââ¬Å"The great affair, the love affair with life, is to live as variously as possible, to groom one's curiosity like a high-spirited thoroughbred, climb aboard, and gallop over the thick, sunstruck hills every day. . . It began as mystery, and it will end in mystery, but what a savage and beautiful country lies in between. ââ¬Å"
